The Education Tax Refund helps eligible families meet the cost of primary and secondary school education and is available for expenses incurred from 1 July 2008.
Eligible families will receive a 50% refund each year for eligible education expenses, up to a maximum of $375 for primary school children and $750 for secondary school children. The refund will apply for the cost of buying, establishing and repairing the following items: laptops, home computers, internet connections, printers, software, school text books, stationary and prescribed trade tools.
Families who receive Family Tax Benfit (FTB) Part A or another payment (such as youth allowance) that stopped the family from receiving FTB Part A will be eligible.
Families should keep their receipts for expenditure from 1 July 2008. These expenses will then be claimed in the tax return prepared for 2008-2009 financial year. Families who do not normally lodge an income tax return can claim the refund through the Australian Taxation Office.
